Ed Gamble Cartoon Collection

The Ed Gamble Cartoon Collection encompasses a representative sample from more than 6,000 original cartoons donated by the nationally syndicated cartoonist to UT Libraries in 2013. The more than 300 cartoons featured in this digital collection date between 1974 and 2005, when Gamble worked as the cartoonist for the Nashville Banner in Nashville, Tenn. (1972-1980) and the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, Fla. (1980-2010). Although Gamble refuses to label himself an editorial cartoonist, the majority of his cartoons illustrate his commentary on current events and personalities over the course of 40 years. Many of his cartoons depict political campaigns, foreign wars, political scandals, economic and social issues, and popular culture fads and icons. He lampooned U.S. presidents from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush, as well as international political figures ranging from Margaret Thatcher to Osama bin Ladin. Gamble drew and inked the monochromatic cartoons on Bristol board, some of which still show editorial marks or pencil sketch marks due to their pre-printed state. The cartoons are dated by copyright year rather than by month, day, and year.
